The Government of India had sanctioned the local municipal authorities to kill stray dogs in an attempt to curb their population and eradicate human deaths caused due to rabies. Under this program almost 50,000 dogs were killed every year.

Ahimsa was founded in August 1996, as a center that would reach out to these helpless creatures to protect their lives, alleviate their suffering, and give them the right to live freely—a right humans take away so oftenforgetting that these animals are the children of the same Creator.
